Schools of Sanctuary Launch 2018
Our Schools launch was a great success!
With 30 attendees including teachers from Swindon and other schools across the South West, as well as representatives from other educational settings and organisations such as Save the Children, all keen to learn more about the City of Sanctuary movement and how their school could work towards an award to become a School of Sanctuary.
The day took place on Wednesday 17th January 2018 at The Commonweal School
A huge Thank you to all our speakers especially Foward Maisokwadzo, from City of Sanctuary & Harriet Marshall, from the Global Learning Programme.
We must also thank Heather Jones from Widden Primary School & teachers Ceri Bowen, from St Nicholas Tollentyne Schol & Lynn Cutler from GLP for the wonderful workshops they each delivered.
Everyone who attended had the chance to:
- meet others who want their schools to help students, staff and the wider community members understand what it means to be seeking sanctuary and to extend a welcome to everyone as equal, valued members of the school community;
- learn from others how to develop a curriculum and a whole school ethos, that benefits and enables all in a school’s community, to empathise with the plight of others, and, through a range of strategies which stimulate critical thinking about human rights, to dispel negative myths surrounding those seeking refuge;
- be inspired by those with passion and enthusiasm for the work they have done, and are doing, under the ‘umbrellas’ of Schools of Sanctuary and the Global Learning Programme.
A delicious lunch was provided for all in attendance by Cotswold Cooks
