Emotions

This theme supports teaching staff in helping children to explore their emotions in a fun and simple way. Through the activities and books provided in this Emotions FAB Fusion collection, children can discover:

  • how emotions can change on a daily basis depending on their immediate environment
  • that feelings live inside our bodies and that they can gain awareness, within a safe environment, of the physical sensations that different feelings can create

Through this Emotions FAB Fusion collection, we aim to support teaching staff to enhance a child’s early steps towards emotional self-awareness and self-regulation and enable them to develop socially appropriate ways of communicating with others.

We also hope the Emotions FAB Fusion collection will encourage children to become aware of how different cultural influences and conventions can influence how we present ourselves emotionally to others by use of voice, gesture, and physicality.

Our Emotions FAB Fusion collection of books and activities can also help children to share, understand and respect how each might express and communicate the same emotion but in different ways, according to their learnt cultural environment.

The books, games and activities in this FAB Fusion Emotions collection support teaching staff in their work to view the world’s cultures with mutual respect and shared appreciation.

Being aware that some children will have lived experience of displacement, and may not have the spoken language, nor the emotional confidence, to express their feelings, the books and activities in this Emotions FAB Fusion collection have been carefully curated.

However, please note: all teaching staff working with children on this topic should be aware of the impact of trauma experience on young people.  Some helpful background reading to support existing teaching staff knowledge of this subject is advised:

  • This publication, “Guidance for Teachers on Stress and Trauma” from the UNHCR 6177f8724.pdf (unhcr.org) has some valuable practical guidance for creating and sustaining a safe learning environment
  • More publications and courses with practical guidance for teaching staff:

In this FAB Fusion Emotions collection, you will find a combination that may include:

  • fiction and non-fiction books – including dual language books
  • rhymes, poems and songs
  • indoor and outdoor games
  • puzzles and word games
  • art and craft activities
  • card games (words / pictures / numbers)
  • objects / toys for imaginative play
