Refugee Week 2023 has the theme of ‘Compassion’. We welcome you all to join us in celebrating people who are seeking sanctuary through art and culture.
Events for Refugee Week 2023
COMPASSION IN ACTION EXHIBITION – Tuesday 20th June 10:00am – 2:00pm, The Hub Swindon.
During Refugee Week, 19th – 23rd June our Compassion in Action exhibition will focus on art and literature pieces that represent what compassion means to us as a community.
It’s also an opportunity to see art work created by people with lived experience of migration or seeking sanctuary. Their artwork focuses on journeys of seeking sanctuary in the UK.
Come and enjoy the pieces any time, or join Swindon City of Sanctuary staff at the Hub on Tuesday 20th June 10-2pm. Learn more about why we celebrate Refugee Week and what it means to seek sanctuary in Swindon.
If you are an artist, please take a look at the poster for how you can be involved with the exhibition! The closing date for submissions is 5pm on 12th June.
CELEBRATION OF WELCOMES – Wednesday, 21st June, 6:00pm-7:30pm, Lawn Manor Academy.
Lawn Manor Academy’s annual
Celebration of Welcomes evening
This will be Lawn Manor Academy’s third annual Celebration of Welcomes event: if you attended last year or in 2019, you’ll know what a brilliant celebratory showcase of cultural diversity it is; if you’ve not been before, you’re in for a treat!
COMMUNITY EVENT AT SWINDON CENTRAL LIBRARY – Thursday 22nd 10:00am-2:00pm, Swindon Central Library.
Come and join us at Swindon Central Library to celebrate Refugee Week’s 25th Birthday. On the day we will be celebrating the launch of our new community fortnightly events “We’re Open Families”, sharing recipes, celebrating authors with experience of migration and sharing messages of welcome. Create Studios will be there with an opportunity to share your stories about living in Swindon. With activities for children, families and anyone in the community – we can’t wait to see you there!
Information for Schools
Below you will find a link to the PDF of the powerpoint presentation which was shared with schools at Refugee Week meeting in March 2023. The PDF features resources, ideas and activities specially designed for schools and colleges to connect with this year’s Refugee Week theme – “Compassion”. We would love for schools to join us in exploring COMPASSION IN ACTION. As part of our exhibition at the Hub, we would like to see submissions from everyone in our community on what compassion means to you.
Create an A3/A4 piece of art, illustrated poem or song about what compassion means to you by 5pm on 12th June.
The winning entries will be displayed in a public gallery space during Refugee Week 2023.
We can’t wait to see what you create!
