Refugee Week Swindon
DIFFERENT PASTS, SHARED FUTURE
18th -24th June 2018
Join us for Refugee Week 2018, where we will be hosting events all over Swindon!
These events aim to create a sense of community and hospitality in our town, to include refugee and asylum seekers from the Swindon area and to raise awareness and appreciation of the contribution that they make to our town.
Refugee Week Swindon 2018 is being organised by Swindon City of Sanctuary, The Harbour Project, Voluntary Action Swindon (VAS) and Swindon & Marlborough Amnesty.
We are still looking for volunteers for events throughout the week- if you are interested in volunteering for Refugee Week 2018 please contact us on [email protected].
Check out full details of the events below and information on how to book your ticket!
Join us for an evening of celebration and inspiration as we explore Swindon’s unique history and how it was founded upon people moving here from other places; initially from other parts of the UK and later from all over the world, as Swindon quickly grew into the industrial hot-spot we know and love today.
We will be screening the locally-made and critically-acclaimed feature film Railway Town, which was made in 2016 to mark the 175th Anniversary of ‘New Swindon’. Following the film will be a panel discussion looking at Swindon’s fascinating and fast development as a town which now has over 200,000 people speaking over 120 first languages.
This event marks the launch of Refugee Week 2018, a national week-long arts festival celebrating the contribution that refugees make to our communities across the UK.
Tickets cost £6 and can be bought via the Swindon Theatres website – https://swindontheatres.co.uk/Online/tickets-coming-to-swindon-2018
Come along to see Breathing Fire, this year’s Swindon Refugee Week playback theatre specialists. Breathing Fire will be sharing individual and collective stories, tapping into the griot (Afrikan storytelling), grounded in their ancestral heritage.
