The Cambridge Dictionary defines home as, “The place where you live or feel you belong.”  This short definition is full of complexity.

Home means something different to all of us. It can be a place, a smell, an emotion or a person. To those who have needed to seek sanctuary, ‘home’ can be a hard topic to discuss, especially for children.

The books and activities in our FAB Fusion Home collection can support teaching staff and family support workers to start conversations in a trauma-informed, sensitive way, about our home on the planet, our journeys to and experiences in new homes and future hopes of belonging.

Please note: Being mindful that some children’s lived experiences of (forced) migration to the UK may have been challenging and traumatic, it is essential for teaching staff and support staff to know the information that the school setting already holds about children with whom they’ll be working.

It is also helpful for teaching staff to take time to research about the countries from which families originated or from which they may have fled.  At the same time, it is important to be mindful and sensitive to avoid making generalisations about these cultural contexts and experiences.

As with all the FAB Fusion collections, the books, games and activities in this FAB Fusion Home collection support teaching staff in their work to view the world’s cultures with mutual respect and shared appreciation.
