Sanctuary in Parliament 2018

On 12th November 2018, we joined Sanctuary groups across the country in Portcullis House, Westminster, to campaign for a fairer asylum system. There were more people campaigning than ever, with approximately 150 people in attendance, including South Swindon MP, Robert Buckland.

Zinat, a new refugee living in Swindon for less than a year, met Robert to tell him about her experience of the current limitations regarding family reunion, as well as the crucial importance of intensive English classes for new refugees.

We are continuing the conversation with Robert to look at local ESOL provision and how we can create more such opportunities for other sanctuary seekers that Zinat has enjoyed.

Nationally, City of Sanctuary is joining forces with Asylum Matters to campaign for the following three changes to the asylum system, which are all key to making it more fair:-

  1. The right to work for people who have asylum claims outstanding for more than six months;
  2. Extension of refugee family reunion;
  3. An end to indefinite immigration detention.
